Exhibition for the 20th Anniversary of the Chemistry and Materials Technology for Conservation-Restoration Study Programme

In 2025, the Institute of Chemistry at SCI MUNI commemorates 20 years since the establishment of the unique study programme Chemistry and Materials Technology for Conservation-Restoration. To mark this occasion, an interesting poster exhibition has been set up at the University Campus Bohunice.

20 Years of the Chemistry and Materials Technology for Conservation-Restoration Study Programme

In 2003, under the leadership of Professor Jiří Příhoda, the Bachelor’s study programme Chemistry and Materials Technology for Conservation-Restoration (CCR) was accredited. The first students enrolled in the academic year 2004/2005.

In 2007, the programme was expanded to include a follow-up Master’s degree. Professor Příhoda led this study programme until 2023, when Associate Professor Karel Novotný was appointed as the new programme guarantor. Over the past 20 years, 93 students have successfully completed the Bachelor's degree, and 61 students have earned their Master's degrees.

The Chemistry and Materials Technology for Conservation-Restoration study programme is a unique interdisciplinary field at the Department of Chemistry, SCI MUNI. Since its inception, it has established itself as a key programme for educating experts in the field of cultural heritage preservation. CCR emphasizes the integration of several key disciplines: chemistry, material sciences, fundamental physics, and the foundations of art history, combined with basic restoration techniques.

The goal of the programme is to provide students with the knowledge and skills necessary for the protection and restoration of cultural monuments. This includes material analysis, the study of degradation processes, conservation-restoration interventions, and preventive measures essential for the long-term preservation of heritage objects.

The exhibition, open to the general public, offers visitors—including current and prospective students—a great opportunity to explore how scientific approaches intersect with the artistic sphere. It showcases how knowledge of materials, chemistry, and modern technologies contribute to the preservation of cultural heritage.

The 20th Anniversary CCR Exhibition, held at the university campus in Brno-Bohunice (in the corridor on the 2nd floor between pavilions C12 and C10), provides not only an overview of the programme’s history but also insights into its current development and future challenges. The exhibition features student and graduate projects dedicated to the restoration and protection of valuable historical materials, as well as their reflections on studying this interdisciplinary programme.

This exhibition, prepared as a brief glimpse into the study programme, was organized by Radka Kopecká, Gabriela Vyskočilová, and Karel Novotný, with the assistance of graphic designer Kamil Sobek.

Don't forget to visit us at the Bohunice campus before the end of April, after which the exhibition will move to the Kotlářská campus.
